Rohtang Pass, Himachal Pradesh

Set in the Himalayan range of Pir Panjal, Rohtang Pass is a gateway to Lahaul and Spiti Valleys. This stunning spot in India’s northernmost state is one of Bollywood’s most sought-after movie sets, with films like Jab We Met and Highway showcasing the region’s spectacular mountain scenery.

It’s also a popular travel destination for tourists seeking thrill and adventure. The best time to visit is from May to October, when trekkers and road-trippers follow its route for breathtaking vistas of the dramatic glaciers and peaks.

Goa

With its idyllic coastline and beautiful churches, Goa has always caught the fancy of Indian filmmakers, raising its tourism profile in the process. This beautiful blend of Portuguese and Indian cultures offers sun, sea, sand and spirituality by the Arabian Sea.

Much of Goa’s coastline has been used in Bollywood movies, with the northern Fort Aguada a particular favourite. Scenes were shot at the 17th-century landmark for movies including Rangeela, Dil Chahta Hai, Golmaal, Dhoom and Honeymoon Travels, inspiring countless tourists to pack their bags and visit.

Pangong Lake, Ladakh

Located in Ladakh across the Indo-Chinese border, the world’s highest saltwater lake is perched almost 4,350m above sea level. Pangong Lake famously changes colour to appear blue, green and red at different times of the year, in stark contrast to the arid mountains surrounding the beauty spot.

Bollywood movies like Jab Tak Hai Jaan and 3 Idiots have shone a spotlight on Pangong’s natural beauty. Fans visiting the area can stay in luxury accommodation on the banks of the lake and stop at 3 Idiots Point to see the iconic yellow scooter from the film's climax.

Udaipur City Palace, Rajasthan

Udaipur’s flamboyant palace took nearly 400 years to build and has overlooked the bustling city since the 16th Century. The imposing landmark is hard for visitors to miss, but Bollywood has showcased its stunning architecture and surrounding landscapes to the world through countless movie appearances. Hollywood also got in on the act, featuring the nearby Aravali mountain range in the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy.

You can feel like royalty in Udaipur with a stay at another of its historic palaces – the Taj Lake Palace. Set on its own island, the grand building has hosted royalty, poets and writers over the centuries and now welcomes guests to experience a bygone era for themselves.

Munnar, Kerala

Set in the mountains of Kerala’s Western Ghats, the hill station of Munnar is surrounded by rolling hills dotted with tea plantations. The former British Raj resort has made many Bollywood appearances over decades in films like Chennai Express, Nishabd and Life of Pi, fuelling global interest in Southern Indian destinations.

This region is an adventurer’s dream, with Eravikulam National Park on its doorstep. A haven for the endangered mountain goat Nilgiri tahr, this sprawling reserve is home to waterfalls, hiking trails and spectacular views from the peak of Anamudi.

Gulmarg, Kashmir

Bollywood has long appreciated the green meadows and snow-capped mountains surrounding the town of Gulmarg. Over the years, films like Highway, Jawaani Hai Deewani, Haider and Rockstar have shone a spotlight on this Kashmiri gem and inspired tourists to experience its beautiful landscapes first-hand.

The Kashmir Valley and nearby Srinagar are one of the country’s most militarised zones and prone to civil unrest, however, the vast majority of locals are friendly, helpful and welcoming.

When planning a visit to the “Switzerland of India”, ensure you stay in a tourist-friendly area and hire a trusted guide.
