SPOTLIGHT ON PRINCESS JULIANA AIRPORT

24 August 2015

You’ve probably never heard of Princess Juliana Airport, and possibly the island of St Maarten, however you have probably seen its runway. This tiny island has the second-busiest airport in the eastern Caribbean; with plenty of large aircraft making their way down its relatively short – for international standards – runway, but it’s the approach that makes it really stand out.

Due to an array of hills at the far end of the airport, you can only approach from one direction, taking aircraft over one of the busiest beaches on the island. That, coupled with the short length of the runway means that the aircraft have to land right after the beach, allowing those on the beach to get a close look at them. The end of the runway is fenced, with signs warning people about the power of those jet engines, but as long as you stay on the beach you’ll be fine, just make sure you hold onto your hats! It’s a great spot to get images, with plenty of tourists posing on the sand, and a must for any plane spotter looking to get some great up close shots of the aircraft.
