SPOTLIGHT ON BLACK ROCK MUNICIPAL AIRPORT

11 January 2016

Burning Man is an annual festival that takes place in the midst of the Nevada Desert, far, far away from civilisation. There are bigger airports, but they are much further away, so every year a group of volunteers set up Black Rock Municipal Airport, an FAA-designated airport (identifier 88NV) that exists only for that one week a year.

Located in the middle of a dry lake bed, it is essentially two dirt strips, one an incoming runway, the other outgoing. There is a terminal building, as well as a charter service operator, skydiving operator and a fuel depot. Each year there is also a lottery system whereby festival-goers can win a trip up in one of the aircraft stationed here. Safety is paramount, with a team of volunteers ensuring every arriving pilot is given plenty of safety information, as well as undergoing safety briefings upon arrival.

However, don’t hop off your aircraft expecting some sort of executive lounge, there isn’t a lot here to offer any sort of creature comforts. Aircraft are taxied away from the runways where many pilots then seal them with tape and tie them down to weather the frequent dust storms. You’ll also find many of them camp beneath the wings of their aircraft to make the most of the shelter provided.
