How much does it cost to charter a private jet?

We are often asked ‘how much does a private jet cost?’ and it’s not an easy question to answer. There are so many variables involved in chartering a private jet, and each one will have an impact on cost. Here, we’ve tried to explain just what goes into the process.

So, how much is a private jet? If you’re a celebrity such as Donald Trump, or a member of a royal family, it seems you can spend anything upwards of a $100 million on a customized luxury airliner. For something smaller, a brand new Gulfstream G650 will cost you just $65 million or the smaller Cessna Citation X, just $20 million.

Now, if you just want to know how much to rent a private jet, or as many would say how much to charter a private jet, that comes down to many factors. The main factor is what plane is required which in itself isn’t as straight forward as you may think. There are many categories of private jet, from turbo props to light jets, and midsized jets up to luxury executive airliners. Each category is mainly based on size, which in turn ascertains how many passengers, how much luggage and how far you can travel. So, if you had very little luggage, three passengers and were only doing a short hop from state to neighboring state, you can get away with a much smaller aircraft, perhaps even a turboprop aircraft such as a Piper Seneca. A short hop on one of these, say from Montauk to White Plains would take around 40 minutes and cost approx. $2,789 and can seat 4-6 people. If you wanted to do a short hop, but it was a ski trip and you were taking all your own equipment, you’d need something a little larger such as a Citation Sovereign. If you were flying long haul, you’d need to upgrade to either a midsized jet such as a Bombardier Learjet 60XR or a heavy jet like a Gulfstream G550. You could also go even larger with a luxury airliner such as an Airbus A319 or a Boeing BBJ.

Aside from the aircraft itself, there are a whole other host of costs associated. These jets can fly from a whole host of airports, so chances are they’ll need to relocate from where they are based, to the airport best suited to you. This interestingly does give rise to an opportunity for you to get a cheaper flight, if someone else is moving an aircraft somewhere you need to be, from where you’re located. This is called an ‘empty leg’ flight, and you can usually hop on for a cheaper cost as the aircraft relocation fee has already been paid by the end user. Depending on how long you spend at your destination, there may also be airport parking charges and costs associated with crew. There are also airport landing fees, handling fees and in many cases, passenger taxes also to pay. If your journey is a long one, you may also need to stop to refuel, which will also incur extra costs.
